🤔 10 Questions with… Jason Mitchell (AI Consultant & Executive Producer)
I started Dealmakers to demystify the world of talent agents. This role is not only widely misunderstood, even by those within my industry, but also rarely discussed as a career to aspire towards.
There’s no degree, no guidebook, and no standard pathway.
What I’ve also come to realise is that mine isn’t the only job like this. The entertainment industry is full of fascinating roles that are integral but, like me, get asked the same question…
“What do you actually do?”
10 Questions with… will shine a light on some of these jobs.
Today, we have Jason Mitchell.
Jason Mitchell founded The Connected Set in 2011, a television and online video producer operating at the intersection of TV and emerging technology.
He is a leading expert in the practical uses of AI tools in development and production, delivering workshops at major conferences including Content London, Content Americas in Miami, PrimeTime Canada and South Korea's Global Content Conference, plus consulting for a variety of broadcasters, distributors and publishers.
Jason also co-founded Mashed, one of YouTube's biggest animation channels, with 5.5 million subscribers and over 3 billion cross-platform views.
I sat down with Jason and put to him my 10 Dealmakers Questions.
Let’s go! ⬇️
➡️ When did you first realise that this job was a real job and one you could actually do?
Adding ‘AI Consultant’ to my CV was a happy accident. Three years ago, I started integrating AI into my TV and social video workflows and shared my experiences via LinkedIn. Suddenly, I found myself booked to deliver hands-on workshops and AI consultancy to producers all over the world, from Korea to Canada, Brazil, and Poland, and I realised there was a real need for industry-wide AI upskilling.
➡️ What’s the biggest misconception people have about your job?
Some people think mastering AI is NOT a creative pursuit, but I think the opposite. Getting AI to do what you want is much like directing a film crew - it's about clear, concise, descriptive language. The good news is many people in the TV and video sector are excellent visual communicators, and this gives them a natural advantage when articulating their vision to an AI system.
➡️ Walk us through a day in your life. What’s a good day, and what’s a nightmare day?
I wear three hats as I work across AI projects, The Connected Set (TV and video production), and Spud Gun Studios (YouTube and animation).
On a good day, I'm usually problem-solving for my own or a client's business in an agentic system like Claude CoWork. I try not to see any day as a bad day, but the relentless pace of platform and technology changes can be exhausting.
